Narrative of what we did

At 661 8th Ave, NSN was tasked with installing an 8-story sign on top of an existing 2 story building. Prior to building the sign structure, North Shore reinforced the existing building with steel cross bracing members to ensure the added gravity and lateral loads would be properly resolved by the existing building and foundation. From there a steel dunnage system was designed, fabricated, and installed to support the sign above without having to impact any of the buildings existing mechanical units located on the roof. Large, prefabricated sign truss sections were used to expedite installation time and efficiency erect the structure while minimizing the impact to the 24/7 pharmacy occupying the building. For the electrical system, North Shore had to enlarge the existing switch gear room and trench in a new service from Con Edison located on 42nd street. Custom copper details were made to reuse the existing electrical equipment to avoid taking the entire store offline. Covid 19 delayed the final connection of the electrical system so North Shore brought in two 50 kva generators to power the sign until Con Edison resumed normal operations.
